Sophia Forke smuggled narcotics in the outer colonies of the Solar System amassing enough wealth to build a mansion in the town of Maternity on the planet Oshun (Nu Tong Beta 2).  She created a criminal enterprise which infiltrated every aspect of the community which included all local activities of the breeding guild, the tea farms and the harvesting of river oysters.  She was addicted to the narcotic known as Dark Star which increasingly clouded her thinking.

Boy Hammond, who took for himself the name "Thomas Helen Hammer", was born in the village of Eden Springs on the planet Oshun.  His mother was registered with the breeding guild.  His father was a breeding stud owned by the Gumpta sisters.  After puberty, he was examined and classified as an "unviable male".  On his fourteenth birthday, his mother sold him to a male employment agent and he was assigned to work at the Upajaoo Garbh Reclamation Center with a five year contract.  Late in 2269, he ran away to the badlands where he joined men sheltered by Hawthorne Abendsen.
