Carnie's parents had hoped for a large family but had difficulty conceiving.  She was an only child.  The Hoagland Institute identified her as an exceptional candidate not infected with the DeMarco Nanite Virus after her parents had sent in a home genetic test kit.  She was genetically augmented by means of a new nanite developed at the Institute.  She was monitored, and when she contracted the DNV, her nanites regulated her ability to spread the virus.

By the time Carnie was thirteen, the public school system in California had shut down and been replaced with online learning.  After earning her high school diploma, Carnie spent eight years at Cornell University studying plant genetics.  While she studied in New York, the post American nation states took shape.

In 2039, Carnie was granted a visa to leave the New American Union and emigrate to Mars where she had been hired by the new start up Amore Foods.
