Fukada Nokatomi grew up in a Japanese family in a Filipino world in "Litle Manilla" in the Woodside neighborhood of Queens New York. Her father, Minoru Nokatomi was a junior architect at Fox Designs who never made a name for himself. Any work of substance which he created was appropriated by his manager. His greatest work was in the support work he did on Century Tower in Woodside which towered over "Little Manilla" to its north. Fukada's mother, Yuki Nokatomi, was a photographer. Her artistic works were never well received. While she worked at a local art gallery, the owner allowed her to maintain a small display of her work, although it did not sell. The building which housed the gallery was torn down to make was for Century Tower. Yuki Nokatomi then worked as a commercial photographer mainly for a firm which sold stock footage, and also form time to time for Fox Designs. Fukada was a middle child with an older brother and a younger sister.
