Johanna’s father, Cole Gray (1951-1995) was a club owner and professional body builder who died after being stabbed in an alleyway behind one of the city’s many gay bars. The murder was never solved. Gray’s club had a back entrance at the far end of the same alley. Johanna was raised by her mother, Lauren Gustern (1970-2087), who, when Johanna was a child, worked concurrently as a lifeguard, a nighttime desk clerk at the Albion Hotel and as a boardwalk performance artist. By the time Johanna graduated college, Lauren was assistant manager at a clothing closeout store.
Johanna grew up as angry child who missed having a father. After her mother married Malik Adani, she was an angry child who resented her step-father.
In 2031, as the nation-states were falling, Johanna accepted a substantial payment from Samuel Feldstein shortly before she married him. He was then allowed to emigrate with Gray to Barrett Base. After six months, he applied for, and was granted, separate quarters.
