Mai, her sister Fang and brother Jing all grew up in an upper middle-class household in Freehold Township, New Jersey. They were one of very few Chinese families in the area. The three children were extremely close, although they each developed very different interests and talents.
Mai was recognized for her interest and understanding of the physical sciences, especially biology and chemistry. Fang studied classical music mastering both the cello and violin before forming the band "Eden's Desolation". Jing was attracted to the horse stables and the track. He became a jockey, but his career was sidelined after an arrest for soliciting a male prostitute. He later became a prostitute himself, dressed as a woman and working the streets of Manhattan.
