Elsie’s father, Michael Young (1950-present), was a mid-level manager with Ingersoll Rand before the company closed its local operations. He then opened a marijuana dispensary which is currently managed by Elsie’s older brother.  Her mother, Nancy Wood, was a massage therapist.  Growing up, Elsie was singularly focused on her studies and consistently took top honors.  While doing graduate work, she had a brief affair with a friend of her brother's which resulted in a pregnancy.  She married the father, Scott Redford, but both immediately realized that they were very different people and the was an empty gesture doomed to fail.  They divorced before the baby was born.  The baby lived with her parents with her brother and Scott all involved in raising him.

After she received her PhD, Elsie's homing beacon was activated.  She was sent to the lab on the grounds of the Homestead Air Force Base where she worked with Jacqueline Martins and Georgia Beals under Ailrinni's supervision.  The super-soldier program had already been discontinued, and she was assigned to primarily work with Martins.

When the Homestead lab was relocated to Merritt Island, Elsie worked independently on her research nominally under Martins' direction, but her work was more closely aligned with Beal's work with the chemical components of memory, and she was eventually reassigned to that department.

In 2031 a fire at the building housing what had been Micheal York's dispensary killed John York, Scott Redford and Elsie and Scott's seventeen year old son, Thor Morningstar Redford.  Nancy Wood escaped the fire and, although badly burned, made a full recovery.  The fire was never fully investigated due to the recent Lizard Hunt's effect on local services.  Local speculation pinned the fire on the son who was said to be troubled and unhappy.
