Isla's mother was an IT tech at N.A.S.A.'s Cape Canaveral facility.. Her father was a low level launch pad tech. There are reports that the Knolpe household was tense during Isla's childhood. Nigel Knolpe was resentful that his wife was better educated and better paid than he was. As time went by, he became resentful that she did not take his last name, as well as of her "hippy" habits and attitudes. As Nigel Knolpe pulled away, Ragan Renfield attempted to find solace and comfort in others, but continued choosing men whose attitudes were similar to her husband.
Isla and her sister both spent their childhoods trying to avoid men. Brie developed a disdain and distrust of men which led her to eventually join Lacy Rose's political movement. Isla, however, embraced an upbeat attitude in which men were simply a nuisance.
