Marissa was abandoned at a fire station in Ridgewood, NJ when she was roughly one year old.  Her name and date of birth were created by a social worker from the New Jersey Department of Child Services.  She passed through six different foster homes during her childhood.

During her senior year of high school, Marissa was mysteriously notified that she had been awarded a full scholarship at the University of Central Florida which included housing and a monthly stipend.  The Hoagland Institute offered her a job while she was attending UCF.  

In 2023, Marissa married the manager of containment facilities John Romano.  She expressed a strong desire for a home and family unlike what she experienced in her own upbringing.  However, when the Hoagland Institute moved operations to Barrett Base in 2030, Marissa left her husband and son behind.  She and John Romano never divorced, but they never lived as husband and wife again.  

The psychological profile for Marissa Thomas highlighted her inability to acknowledge the dramatic disconnect between her actions and what she believed her life-goals were.  She believed her greatest desire was to create the family she did not have as a child by becoming a wife and mother.  However, she remained hyper-focused on her work and her career to the point of neglecting the family she had built.
